What is Social Emergency Medicine?

Social Emergency Medicine is a branch of Emergency Medicine that explores the interplay of social factors and the emergency care system. The Social determinants of health (SDH) are non -medical factors that shape the conditions of daily lives and act together to affect the health of individuals and their communities. These factors and systems include economic policies and systems, social norms, social policies and systems (WHO). Research shows that SDH are more important than lifestyle choices in influencing health outcomes. Although only recently acknowledged as a formal section of Emergency Medicine, LSU Emergency Medicine has integrated Social Emergency into our residency training for decades. Through an integrated curriculum, ongoing community engagement projects, research, an academic track, and our routine approach to patient care, we live and breathe social medicine daily.

Social Emergency Medicine Curriculum and Track

LSU Offers a Social Medicine curriculum through integrated didactics (Conference, and Journal club),  and a requirement to accrue “social EM credits'' on a yearly basis. Residents are required to integrate social EM objectives in our weekly didactic and patient safety conferences.  Residents that go above the required minimum social EM credit requirements may choose to participate in the Social EM academic track.  Those  that complete this track graduate with a certificate in Social Emergency Medicine. Residents who show a sustained commitment to Social Emergency Medicine and its initiatives may also be awarded the prestigious annual Social EM Champion Award.  Tracks and Social EM hours throughout the year.
