Multicultural Engagement Division

About the Division of Multicultural Engagement
Over fifteen years ago, LSU-New Orleans Emergency Medicine recognized that in order to provide the best care for our diverse patient population, our program had to recruit providers from varied backgrounds and strive to create a work environment where everyone could be their authentic self. We realized that this takes intentionality and continued effort. Our EM leadership and Dr. Lisa Moreno decided to form the Section's first "Diversity Committee". This has grown and evolved into our Multicultural Engagement Committee. We continue to work toward the modern principles of DEI:
Development of cultural awareness in ourselves and our colleagues.
Engagement, both within the department and in our communities, so we can be more connected and give back.
Intersectionality, celebrating everyone’s unique identity and learning from one another.
Committee leadership includes Dr. Pierre Detiege and Dr. Jordan Vaughn, as co-directors, but the work is a group effort by the many faculty and resident members of our committee. Our committee supports social events and community outreach and works closely with the Social EM Division. Respect for the individual is the hallmark of our pedagogy, whether that individual is our patient, family, learner, colleague or teacher. Our program continues to champion acceptance of everyone for who they truly are!
